nercohen This has such sentimental value on so many levels - it was an Instant Opus that had been in the making since before the pandemic that came together more perfectly than I could have imagined. Sadly however it also turned out to be the last gig ever played at our beloved Sidebar, Sept 28, 2020. No Worries Improv Music fans - all will be well if we focus on supporting our musicians and each other! Opus Lives!! Make sure you do too! Favorite track: Blue.

about

Hello. My name is scatterjazz, and I support this message and this transmission: SideBar Sessions Volume 11.

I personally curated every gig at the beloved SideBar for three and a half years, with the exception of a string of Mondays where the glorious bountiful burden was shared by Instant Opus. It was an unparalleled dream arising undreamt, and I resist accepting my waking quite yet.

The last time I had heard Joe Dyson live was back before he had mostly-left town, anchoring a power-blues trio led by the late great Henry Butler...Speechless in Lafayette Square I remain in my memory...

Quinn Sternberg is one of the most dynamic and inspirational bassists and bandleaders in the city, and also happens to be a native Hoosier like myself, the son in fact of a very dear mathematics professor of mine from college at Indiana University.

And for those who seek two chordal progressions through their improvised music melees, we have guitar-slinger Jacob Stanley, one of the beacons of the current cosmos of Instant Opus, knotting knuckles with Oscar Rossignoli, one of the lynchpins of musical web-weaving at the SideBar, one of the real titans of New Orleans jazz as it stands today.

This collective had never before performed, and most of these fellows had never met before the brief conversation unfolding before you here. You will likely find jazz and joy and introspection and intrigue. It was a very strong gig in my memory, having heard it unfold in real time through the web-waves.

This is the spirit of Instant Opus, and to a great extent the spirit of the SideBar.

We presented good music in all forms, and if it was made by folks who had never sculpted-sound together previously then all the better! But good music, made in the moment, made the moments what they were.

And boy-howdy, were there ever moments.

This was the last one, the final gig ever performed in the classic SideBar space, in the bizarro-world of 2020, at the end of 5+ months of being at the forefront of live-music streaming before the rest of the world had caught us up, at the tail end of celebrating our 3rd anniversary of music-sharing when the pandemic shut us down.

Those who shared those three and a half years know that truly magic wine was captured in jagged bottles, and so may we all remember it for what it was and hope it can rise again.

Live, laugh and love much y'all, and listen well.
...and Remember the SideBar.

Cheers,
Andy Durta
